Throughout the centuries many religions have been created and forgotten, yet a specific theme always seems to be prevalent in them – that of good and evil. In some shape or form, Islam and Christianity also depict the idea of pure forces versus evil ones, and how they are represented in the real world. Certain people were sinful, while others were holy. This either depended on their actions, such as praying and being good to others, or on their physical attributes. In fact, it was believed by many in the past that having whiter skin, perfect human physique, and being fully clothed was a sign of someone who followed the will of God, which can be seen in artistic representations of angels. On the other hand, having darker skin and physical deformities were signs of someone who had sinned which is why they were “punished” by God to look like the devil. The primary effect of these beliefs became the idea that people with physical disabilities/deformities were subhuman compared to those who were in peak shape. This resulted in the oppression, condemnation, and sometimes even murder of people with deformities, which has much to say about the kind of societies people lived in during the ancient times.
